It’s midday, Wednesday December 10th, with gray skies and some snow flurries. I breathe a sigh of relief while walking across the farm. A nature co-op school group visited this morning for a tour about growing Christmas trees. The young kids were surprisingly inquisitive interspersed with bouts of sliding around in the snow. I enjoy sharing the farm with families visiting to cut their perfect tree and I always welcome visitors who want to learn about permaculture throughout the year. But, now really is my favorite time. Families have come through, my family has served all the hot cocoa, and the tree fields are empty. I’ve done all of the work through the year to get to this point and now I’ve just finished putting everything away for the winter. I walk the farm while Biscuit prances around sniffing out all the varied animal scents. With the snow cover, the scene is eerily quiet — that winter quiet that I love. There are no more farm chores to do and we make our way back home for a warm fire to warm our feet. The farm has returned to my domain again where I work the land in my own peaceful bubble. While not the bleak fate of Sisyphus, I’ve got a few weeks before January marks the annual beginning for rolling the stone back up the hill to next December’s open.
